Revolution Rail & the Adirondacks

Last week my hubs and I drove to the Adirondack mountains for a quick overnight getaway.  We were looking for someplace that was new to us but within driving distance.  After seeing a blog post on facebook for Revolution Rail, we decided to book a night in North Creek, NY.  It was a 6 hour drive, plus stops for snacks and washroom, but the drive itself was super easy.  You don’t stay on the Interstate very long and it’s mainly windy roads as you drive through the region.

North Creek is a small Hamlet in the Gore Mountain region of Adirondack Park.  While Main Street isn’t very long, it has everything you could need.  Because we only stayed the one night we didn’t have much time to explore the area but we did head to a wine bar called BarVino for some after dinner drinks.  And before heading back on the road we stopped in at Café Sarah for coffee and cookies.

We stayed at The Alpine Lodge and I would highly recommend it.  It doesn’t have much by way for amenities, but the rooms were cozy and decked out in what you’d want a mountain lodge to look like (think antler lamps and Navajo prints).  There’s no front desk so you get emailed with your room passcode and that’s it.  There’s a common room that also has a passcode with a cozy fireplace and they offer continental breakfast and coffee.

We chose The Alpine Lodge because it was close to Revolution Rail… less than a minute drive.  We arrived in North Creek Friday late afternoon and were ready to hit the RevRail Trail the next day.

image0There are four timeslots available and we booked Saturday morning at 8:30 (but only because the 10:30 slot was full, but there is also a 12:30 and 2:30 timeslot).  The website recommended we arrive 30 minutes prior to our slot so that we could check in, get the waivers signed, etc.  There is a gift shop with branded items to purchase.  From the gift shop we took a bus to the start/finish area, which was less than a 10 minute drive.

There’s no specific order to the railbikes.  So once you get off the bus, you just need to find a quad or a tandem, depending on what you booked.  My hubs and I ended up with the very last railbike, but that meant we were the first in line on the way back.  We liked that spot!  The entire trail is 3.5 miles one way and then 3.5 miles back (so just over 11 km total).  It should take you around two hours.  At the end of the 3.5 track, the guides will turn the railbikes around and then you peddle your way back to the start/finish spot.

Each railbike has a basket for a bag or backpack.  We brought snacks, water, ponchos (they go rain or shine) and I brought a blanket scarf just in case I got chilly (which I did, so I was glad to have it!)

The only downside is you are at the mercy of the group in front of you.  We had a group (two quads) who likely had never seen the trees like that before because they kept stopping to get off the railbikes to take pictures.  It held everyone up because they had to wait for us before being able to turn the railbikes around (almost a full half hour).

The trail follows the Hudson River and the trees in all their fall colours were beautiful.  If we went a week or two earlier the colours would have been incredibly vibrant… about half of the trees were bare, but it was still so fun and pretty.

You are never alone on the trail.  There are guides at the front and at the back.  They do recommend you leave about 80 feet between the railbike in front, to allow for photos, etc.

I’m so glad my hubs and I decided on this impromptu overnight stay in the Adirondacks… and to think, all because of a facebook blog post   I would definitely recommend this excursion should you find yourself in the area.

**Pro tips:

  • I would recommend you use the washrooms before you arrive.  There are only outhouses available once you’re on the track.
  • They only run until the end of October and they book up fast.  So if you’re thinking about this for next year, make sure to book early (their website doesn’t say when they re-open in the spring or summer)

How to Spend the Weekend in NYC

My hubs and I spent last weekend in New York City.  We went specifically to see a concert on Friday night and planned to spend Saturday walking around and checking off all of the “must see” items on our itinerary.  We lucked out weather-wise; Saturday was 28C and the nights stayed warm.  I could go back to New York again and again (and probably never do the same thing twice!).  There is always so much going on.  New York is one of those cities where the things to do, sights to see, places to eat/drink seem endless.  Everyone has their favourite areas and neighbourhoods.  It can be hard to fit everything into one weekend (my hubs and I are already talking about booking another weekend in NYC next year).

From a transit perspective, New York’s subway system is probably the easiest way to get around (aside from walking…); you can get to pretty much anywhere in the city.  Each ride costs $2.75 (as of September 2019).  Your first ride will cost $1 more for the MetroCard – don’t lose that card.  It’s reloadable and transferrable.  Unfortunately, you can’t buy a weekend or day pass for the subway; you just have to pay per ride.  The other way to get around would be Taxi’s or Ubers, but keep in mind traffic and build quickly.

Here’s how to spend the weekend in NYC:

Day 1

Breakfast: Jack’s Wife Freda (West Village, 50 Carmine Street)

This place fills up quickly and they don’t take reservations, so I would suggest getting there as early as possible.  It has a Mediterranean-inspired menu and won’t leave you feeling overfull.  I would recommend either the Mediterranean Breakfast or Poached Eggs with Grilled Holloumi.

Greenwich Village and the Friends’ Apartment

A five minute walk from Jack’s Wife Freda in the West Village is the Friends’ Apartment located at Bedford and Grove Streets.  It’s the 25th anniversary of Friends and if you’re a fan of the show, this is such a fun photo-op.  Keep in mind, however, that this is an actual apartment building so try to be a quick as possible.  After your picture, spend the rest of the morning wandering through the West and Greenwich Villages (in the morning it’s quiet and very lovely).

Times Square

Hop on the subway (depending on where you end up in Greenwich Village) and head to Times Square.  There’s always lots to see and tons of shopping to do.  When they call New York City the city that never sleeps, they mean in!  Some stores in Times Square stay open to 1 AM.

Lunch – Picnic in the Park

Grab a slice of pizza or a deli sandwich and head into Central Park.  When the weather is warm, you’ll find locals hanging out on the grass with friends or even working on their tans.  Central Park is huge and there is so much to do – pick up a free map from either an information kiosk or a visitor center when you enter and then pick a path to follow and wander.  You can easily spend a few hours walking through park.

World Trade Center and Memorial

From Central Park take the the subway to ether WTC Cortland (1-2-3 Trains) or WTC (E Train).  The 9/11 Memorial is beautiful and moving.  Where each building stood it is now a fountain going 30 feet deep and surround each fountain are the names of those who lost their lives.  I saw a sign that said on each person’s birthday, a rose is placed on the name so they are never forgotten.  Spend as much time here as you need.

You can also head up to the One World Observatory (ticket prices between $32 and $45) for an incredible view of the city.

Dinner: Chinese Tuxedo (Chinatown, 5 Doyers Street)

Head into Chinatown for dinner.  Chinese Tuxedo is a really cool restaurant located on Doyers Street (this street was known as The Bloody Angle and was once the deadliest street in the city).  I would recommend the BBQ pork bun, crispy short ribs, Chinese broccoli and vegetarian fried rice (my hubs and I found this was just the right amount of food for the two of us).

After dinner head next door to the “Chemist” sign.  It’s a speakeasy called Apotheke, serving well-crafted cocktails.  I’d recommend Catcher in the Rye.  Strict dress code after 9PM.  They don’t take reservations.

Day 2

Breakfast: The Butcher’s Daughter (Nolita, 19 Kenmare Street)

This is a plant-based restaurant serving veggies in all sorts of fun ways.  They are not strictly vegan, and do serve eggs (for those looking for more than just veggies…)  Sadly, my hubs and I never made it here on our latest trip, but that just means it’s on our list for our next visit!

Shopping and people watching on the Upper East Side

Walk over to the Spring Street subway station and take the 6-Train to Lexington Ave.  Spend some time browsing through Bloomingdales before heading two blocks south and 3 blocks west for some window shopping on 5th Ave and 57th Street.  Get your wallets ready!  Walk down 5th Avenue putting together your best Carrie Bradshaw outfit and looking for the best, “hello, lover!” shoes.

Lunch: Dante (Greenwich Village, 79-81 Macdougal Street)

After window shopping on 5th Ave, head west one block to 6th Ave and end up at Rockefellar Plaza.  From there you can jump on the F Train from 47-50 Streets Rockefellar Center Station and take it to 4th Street / Washington Square Park.  We’re back in Greenwich Village and heading to the World’s Best Bar (2019).  Dante is a small cafe serving Italian dishes, but in small sharing plate-style.

The High Line & Chelsea Market

It’s a 20 minute walk from Dante to Chelsea Market.  Head up Bleecker Street to Hudson Street, which then turns into 9th Ave.  Chelsea Market is located at 9th and W 15th.  Pick up a one of a kind / locally made souvenir to bring home (like a funky tee or tote bag).  If you a little hungry from the walk over, you’ll find not shortage of sweet shops.

The High Line is a raised garden/park area that was built overtop of an old rail line.  From end to end it will take between 30-60 minutes depending on how fast you walk, or how often you stop for IG-worthy photos.  You’re not trapped, though, there are a few exit/entry points along the way.

Dinner: Westville (Financial District, 110 Wall Street)

With a few locations throughout the boroughs, Westville’s popularity doesn’t seem to be slowing down.  On the healthier side of things (or healthy-ish), you can mix veggies with lean protein and not compromise on taste.  Last time I was there I had the marinated chicken with beets and brussels sprouts.  Everything was super flavourful.  Happy hour drinks included $6 glasses of wine.

After dinner head over to The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog (30 Water Street) for another well-crafted cocktail and cheers to your weekend in NYC coming to a close.

Your New Vacation Wardrobe

I don’t know about you, but I’m not a huge clothes shopper.  I’m not at the mall or browsing online after every paycheque deciding what to buy this week.  I’m more of an “occasion” shopper.  I tend to buy clothes when I have an event to go to (dad’s birthday dinner, girls’ night out, etc.) carefully putting together an appropriate, and hopefully on-trend outfit.  My biggest shopping spree comes right before a vacation.  In fact, most of the sweaters in my closet right now were purchased for my honeymoon in Ireland (we went in October).  If you pulled out any item of clothing from my closet, there’s a good chance I’ll be able to tell you what trip or event it was purchased for.  When my hubs and I decided to head to NYC for the weekend in September I immediately started browsing my go-to shopping apps and adding pieces to my “favourites.”

We were only going for the weekend (Friday to Sunday) so I would only need three outfits (not including flight clothes).  I would need an outfit for Friday night (which included a concert), wandering around all day Saturday sightseeing and then Saturday night out (which included dinner and drinks).  Three outfits.  Easy peasy.

As I was scrolling through Pinterest looking for inspiration, I realized that all of the outfits I liked included pieces I already owned.  That’s when it occurred to me, “what if I don’t buy any new clothes for this trip, but just use what I already own?”  I know, a crazy concept!  And yes, I also know it was only three outfits but the habit of “occasion” shopping ran deep, real deep.  Another fun fact about me: I am very much a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl; the amount of plain tees in my closet is astonishing, so the thought of putting together three half-decent and somewhat trendy outfits was intimidating at first.  This was New York, after all so I needed to step up my game.

That’s when my mission began: put together three outfits for NYC using clothes and accessories already in my closet.  Was I successful?  You bethca!  It was really good to wear pieces I hadn’t worn in ages: earrings I bought in Nice, France, a Motorhead tee I bought for a costume party and a black cami I bought for an anniversary dinner.  Three outfits might not seem like a challenge, but as they say – you have to start somewhere.

Of course this doesn’t mean that I’ll never go “occasion” shopping again, but it does mean that I’ll take a good look in my closet before I add to my online cart.  I challenge you to do the same: use the pieces you already have before purchasing more.
