My Morning Routine

I’ve recently been reading posts from other bloggers sharing their morning routines.  They all sound amazing with tons of time for a mindful breakfast, meditation, yoga, walking the dog… basically all things I have zero time for in the morning.

If you’re like me, you work full time (something along the lines of a 9-5 shift).  I have 60-65 minutes in the morning to get up, eat, pull myself together and get my ass out the door (seriously, at the 66 minute mark there’s a good chance I could miss my train).

As someone who has a full-time job, but won’t cut corners when it comes to my wellbeing, I wanted to share with you what my Monday to Wednesday mornings look like (**full disclosure: I work from home Thursdays and Fridays, so those mornings aren’t as rushed).

5:45am – my alarm goes off.  I stopped hitting the snooze button long ago (see note above about missing my train).  I  do a quick stretch and a roll of the shoulders and I head into the kitchen.

5:50am – I squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a glass, fill half the glass with room temperature water and the other half with water warmed in the kettle (I have a Breville the IQ Kettle, which has different temperature settings so I don’t need to boil the water completely).  I also start packing my Vitamix with what will eventually become my smoothie.

6:00am – time to hit the showers.  I only wash my hair two to three times a week, and at night, so my AM showers are pretty quick (also, growing up in a one-bathroom house meant you had to learn to take quick showers because there was always a line up, or your younger sister banging on the door).  My post-shower facial regime includes Skin Essence Organics Nourish Serum and Rosehip Seed Oil.  I love how they keep my skin hydrated throughout the day.

6:15am – I’m back in the kitchen, but for breakfast this time.  I have a smoothie every morning for breakfast.  They take no time to prepare, which is what I’m looking for in the morning.  This would be the only “down time” I have, as I sit, drink my smoothie and take my daily supplements.  I also grab my lunch out of the fridge and fill my S’well bottle with alkaline water to take with me on the train.

6:25am – time to brush my teeth, do my makeup, (maybe) dry shampoo my hair and finally get dressed.  My makeup routine is not elaborate by any means; some powder, blush, and for my eyes: shadow, liner and mascara.

6:45am – 6:50am – literally running back to the kitchen to grab my lunch bag, car keys, check the temperature to decide if I need a scarf this morning (it gets chilly waiting on that train platform), double check to make sure I have my headphones, so I can listen so my favourite podcast during my commute in to the city, and head out the door.

So, this is me every Monday to Wednesday.  It’s not fancy or particularly mindful or glamorous.  It’s rushed, jam packed, and there’s not a minute to spare (literally), but I bet it’s a lot like your mornings.

I always start my day with lemon water, no matter what.  My smoothies are always nutrient-dense and my daily supplements include things like probiotics and omegas; small things I do each morning to make sure I start my day on the right foot.
